Art Deco, derived from the French term Arts Décoratifs, first began at an international exhibition for art in 1920s Paris. This modern style was a response to the tragedy and world-changing events of World War I, which ended in 1918 and resulted in a widespread shift in the minds of people across Europe. With the war over, artists saw an opportunity to imbue their work with optimism and hope for what the future would bring.
Art Deco reflected this hope with bold patterns, luxurious materials and exotic touches. It took inspiration from past movements like Cubism, Fauvism, Futurism and Suprematism and injected exuberant designs into every aspect of society. Skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building in New York City bore Art Deco influence, but even small everyday pieces like rings, brooches and earrings took on a Deco style.
